Brooklyn Builds Up

There's the doughnut-shaped rental building that's popped up on the South Williamsburg waterfront, at the site of the former Domino Sugar Factory. The Hub, currently Brooklyn's tallest building, sprouted up in Downtown Brooklyn (and contains some affordable housing units). A slew of new apartment buildings now populate Prospect Lefferts garden, the neighborhood bordering Prospect Park that only recently became a rental destination. And rumor has it, Amazon's second U.S. headquarters is likely to join the 7 million square feet of offices coming to Brooklyn.

Brooklyn's building boom is in full swing, bringing new housing, along with retail and office space, to the borough while causing consternation for residents whose neighborhoods are changing before their eyes. And for members of these communities old and new, it means the near-constant presence of noise, dust and scaffolding.

The chart below explores what's in the works for Brooklyn, organized by its 18 Community Board districts (hover over each to see the neighborhoods they cover). It depicts initial construction permits issued by the Department of Buildings from January through September 2017. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the districts containing Williamsburg, Brooklyn Heights and Bushwick are gearing up for even more construction. (And it would appear that Northern Brooklyn is clearing the most space in order to do so.) But as the chart shows, neighborhoods deeper in Brooklyn, like Boro Park and Sheepshead Bay, are clearing out the old and building up the new as well.
